To celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, Youth Engagement Apprentice Charlotte talks about ways you can spread kindness and the benefits of it.

There is no such thing as too much kindness and there can never be enough of it, the idea behind Random Acts of Kindness Day is to promote feelings of kindness and brighten up someone’s day. Let’s make kindness the norm.

Every act of kindness, no matter how big or small is ever wasted. Even if your act of kindness doesn’t feel like a big deal, it will make a huge difference to someone’s day, the smallest things can mean the most to someone at the right time! It’s like a domino effect, one act of kindness can lead to more and more positive outcomes. You might have seen the ‘Pay it Forward’ trend on TikTok, this is an example of one person doing one act of kindness and it snowballing to create a chain of people all doing acts of kindness for one and other.

Being kind also has physical effects on our bodies and minds! Did you know kindness can decrease pain?! Acts of kindness makes our brains produce endorphins- the brains natural painkiller! There is also evidence to suggests that being kind reduces stress, anxiety and depression. Increasing positive moods and relationship satisfaction! It can boost your energy levels and produces the feel-good chemical serotonin- which makes you happy, heals wounds and helps calms you down!

So, how can you take part in Random Acts of Kindness Day? Don’t hold back from uplifting others with compliments and compassion today. You could compliment a stranger or let the person behind you in a queue go ahead of you. Buy a homeless person lunch or donate to a charity. The easiest way to take part in this day is to just treat people how you want to be treated!

The 5 easiest ways you can spread kindness:

  • Smile at someone – ‘If you see someone with out a smile give them one of yours!’
  • Positive Post-it notes – Leave Post-it notes with positive messages on around your office, classroom, or home.
  • Pick up rubbish – If you see some rubbish in the street, do your part for the community and pick it up.
  • Compliment someone – compliment a friend or strangers’ outfit or makeup!
  • Call a family member or friend – call someone you haven’t spoken to in a while.

Are you ready to change the world with Kindness?

‘Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.’ – Princess Diana
