Support In Schools

Support In Schools
The Isle of Wight Mental Health Support Team (MHST) is a service being delivered collaboratively by the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, Barnardo’s and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, offering mental health and wellbeing support in schools*.
Our aim is to improve the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. We aim to achieve this by supporting schools with their Whole School Approach (WSA) to emotional health and wellbeing within their school community, as well as identify and treat mental health issues early.
*The MHST is not funded to work in all schools on the island. Please scroll down below to see which schools we work in.

MHST Overview
The aim of the Mental Health Support Team is the prevention, early identification and treatment of mild to moderate mental health conditions, but what does mild and moderate mental health conditions mean?
· A mild mental health issue is when a person has a small number of symptoms that have a limited effect on their daily life.
· A moderate mental health issue is a new presentation of increasing mild symptoms that can make a person’s daily life much more difficult than usual.

Our Practitioners
MHST Education Mental Health Practitioners (‘EMHPs’) work in schools and colleges on the Island to:
· Deliver sessions to children or young people, focussing on promoting resilience and helping to develop skills and techniques to manage their emotions. These could be assemblies, classroom workshops and/or group work. These could be delivered to students, parents and or school staff. In secondary schools this could involve 1 to 1 work with students. Please note the MHST does not offer individual work to primary aged children.
· If requested by the school support the development of school policies and procedures to improve emotional health and wellbeing
The type of support offered will be dependent on the school’s requests and the young person’s difficulties. The EMHPs work within a Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) framework which is an evidenced-based intervention to support mild to moderate mental health conditions.
